JACKSON LEWIS

It is with distinct pleasure that I share with you Jackson Lewis’ relationship with Susan G. Komen. The relationship was forged in May 2010 in response to the firm’s pro bono initiatives. In collaboration with over 75 pro bono attorney volunteers within Jackson Lewis, spanning all 57 offices nationwide, we now serve 77 Affiliates of Susan G. Komen.

In the past, we have provided multiple sex harassment training sessions at the corporate level, provided advice and counseling related to background checks for the organization’s Youth Programs as part of the 3-Day for the Cure events, revised employee handbook policies, and rendered advice and counseling related to the daily operations of a majority of the affiliates. The research we conducted about state-specific background checks was essential to the organization’s protocol for vetting adult volunteers for these 3-day events as the volunteers would be working closely with minors.

In addition, Jackson Lewis pro bono volunteers have provided advice and counseling related to wage and hour issues, misclassification issues, offer letters, employment applications, employee benefits, and independent contractor agreements. Our benefits attorneys have advised Komen’s General Counsel on the transition of vendor arrangements and have advised on tax-related issues affecting the affiliates. At the national level, and for a state affiliate, we assisted with the development of policies and procedures concerning the privacy and security of personal information.

Working together, we amassed 2,002.6 pro bono hours since the inception of our relationship. This translates to nearly $728,315 in total financial contributions to the Susan G. Komen organization to date.

Jackson Lewis

“Jackson Lewis is deeply committed to providing pro bono service in the communities in which we practice.  An attorney’s pro bono service to the community demonstrates a dedication and professionalism that are highly valued by this firm.  The unmet legal needs of the disadvantaged and charitable organizations are great.  The legal profession possesses unique skills that allow us to serve this population and promote the public interest in a way no other profession can.”
