“When I heard the words 'breast cancer,' it was so much information, so fast, that I felt like it was an out-of-body experience.”
Shari was diagnosed in December 2023, at age 38, & sister Charlyne in April 2024, at 34
In late 2023, Shari was preparing to go to her wedding dress fitting when she felt a small lump in her breast. “Breast cancer never came to my mind,” she said. Her mom recommended she see her doctor, who sent her for a breast ultrasound. Just four months before her wedding, Shari was diagnosed with stage 2B breast cancer.
After Shari’s diagnosis, Charlyne, who had previously felt a lump in her breast and been advised by her doctor to come back in six months, reached back out. Tests ultimately showed she had stage 0 breast cancer. “Looking back, I wish I had asked more questions about why a follow up would be necessary,” Charlyne said. “I want Black women to know the questions to ask, to understand why they’re being monitored and what their options are.”
The sisters leaned on each other throughout their treatment. “I was one step ahead of Charlyne, so I could tell her about the experience and what worked for me. It sounds crazy, but I felt less alone having Charlyne going through this, too,” said Shari.
We both had breast cancer, but our experiences couldn't have been more different.
