Statement on Passage of Vital Cancer Legislation in Oklahoma

OKLAHOMA CITY, OKLAHOMA – MAY 30, 2025 – Susan G. Komen, the world’s leading breast cancer organization, today issued the following statement on the passage of two vital cancer policies in Oklahoma that will eliminate patient cost for supplemental breast imaging and genetic testing.

“We express immense gratitude to Rep. Melissa Provenzano, Sen. Brenda Stanley and the Oklahoma State Legislature for prioritizing early detection of breast cancer and overriding Governor Stitt’s veto of HB 1389, eliminating financial barriers for Oklahomans to access their medically required breast imaging. These critical tests can be expensive and unfortunately many people forego them due to cost. Early detection of breast cancer is not possible without the medically necessary supplemental imaging required for those at a higher risk of developing breast cancer.”

“We also applaud Rep. Nicole Miller and Sen. Brenda Stanley on the enactment of SB 109, which eliminates the financial barrier to the clinically appropriate genetic testing, as well as the recommended screenings based on the results of that testing, ensuring individuals have access to critical information regarding their lifetime cancer risk and recommended early detection and cancer surveillance.”

“Thousands of Oklahomans forgo these critical services due to high out-of-pocket costs. Not anymore. These life-saving bills mean they can now receive the breast imaging and genetic testing they require, likely leading to an earlier breast cancer diagnosis and often better health outcomes.”

“Komen will continue to advocate for legislation that ensures fair and equitable access to high-quality and affordable breast care for all.”
