Breast cancer research has the power to change and save lives. But to reach its full potential, research must reflect the people whose lives are shaped by this disease. By ensuring people of all backgrounds have the opportunity to share their data and experiences, we can fuel discoveries that represent everyone, accelerate progress and bring us closer to cures, faster. 

Susan G. Komen’s ShareForCures® is a research registry that connects scientists with information from people who have or had breast cancer. By bringing together real-world data from individuals with different diagnoses, backgrounds and lived-experiences, ShareForCures can help researchers uncover patterns, answer important questions and accelerate discoveries. 

Building a registry that reflects the diversity of the breast cancer community takes partnership. The ShareForCures Alliance exists to bring together organizations committed to engaging their communities, and ensuring research represents the people it is intended to serve. 

Among those partners is Tigerlily Foundation, an organization built on the belief that patients have the power to create change. 

Tigerlily: Diagnosis to Movement  

Tigerlily Foundation began with a promise. 

The founder, Maimah Karmo, was 32 years old and the mother of a young daughter when she was diagnosed with stage 2 breast cancer in 2006. During treatment, she made a commitment to create an organization that would educate, advocate for, empower and support young women affected by breast cancer. What began during Karmo’s own experience with the disease has grown into a national organization working to address disparities in breast cancer based on age, stage and race. 

At the center of Tigerlily’s work is a commitment to patient advocacy and health equity, empowering people not only to navigate their own care but to become leaders capable of changing systems for those who come after them. 

Making Every Experience Count 

Tigerlily Foundation being a part of the ShareForCures Alliance creates another way for patients to turn their individual experiences into something that could benefit the broader breast cancer community by submitting their breast health information to expand research efforts.  

ShareForCures is building a diverse registry that reflects the many people and experiences impacted by breast cancer, including differences in medical history, race, ethnicity, gender identity, geography, age at diagnosis and more. Every person who participates adds an important piece to a much larger picture, helping researchers better understand breast cancer, uncover new discoveries and move us closer to closer to cures, faster.  

For communities that have historically been left out of research, participation can be especially powerful. More representative data can help researchers better understand differences in breast cancer experiences and outcomes and ask questions that might otherwise go unanswered. It also reinforces an idea central to Tigerlily’s mission: Patients aren’t simply the subjects of research. They can be partners in advancing it.
