Susan G. Komen Forms Groundbreaking Alliance to Unite Breast Cancer Community for Policy Change

Susan G. Komen’s Center for Public Policy has been a proven leader in the breast cancer policy space since its inception. By empowering people and policymakers with knowledge, connecting advocates together and mobilizing communities, we’ve led efforts to spark lasting change. Today, we are thrilled to announce the launch of the Alliance for Breast Cancer Policy, in partnership with 25 leading organizations in breast cancer policy, to drive federal policy changes that improve access, affordability, quality and patient outcomes.

Long-lasting, systemic policy change is needed now more than ever. While we have made significant strides over the last several decades, the stark reality is that more than 42,000 women and men in the U.S. are expected to die from breast cancer this year alone. The need for patient-centered, evidence-based policy solutions to improve breast cancer care has never been more urgent.

To tackle such challenges, a bold new collaboration is necessary. The Alliance for Breast Cancer Policy unites the power of our community to push for needed policy change to benefit patients wherever they are in their breast cancer journey. Our voices are strongest together.

The Alliance will champion critical policy reforms, including the Access to Breast Cancer Diagnosis Act. This legislation aims to reduce financial barriers by requiring private health plans, including high-deductible plans, to fully cover the cost of diagnostic and supplemental breast imaging.

The coalition will also focus on more accurately capturing the scope and experiences of those living with metastatic breast cancer. By working with regulatory and scientific agencies to improve data collection and count every person diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer, the Alliance for Breast Cancer Policy aims to equip policymakers with the details to strengthen treatment access, properly allocate resources and improve health outcomes for individuals living with metastatic breast cancer.

For individuals across the country to receive diagnosis, treatment and the best possible health outcomes, federal policymakers need to prioritize access and affordability. Komen is proud to convene the Alliance to unite as one to drive policy change on behalf of everyone in the breast cancer community.
