Komen has a long-standing partnership with Dana-Farber/Harvard Cancer Center staff to co-develop, review and shape the content to ensure it reflects the latest research and best practices in breast cancer care. This collaboration, which began when Komen’s site first launched in 1999, ensures the information Komen provides is comprehensive and scientifically backed. Together, this partnership is the foundation for Komen’s standard of disseminating breast cancer information.

Setting the Informational Standard

“I am so proud of the rigorous evidence-based process we use, and the thought and care that goes into every detail and word that is chosen within the About Breast Cancer section. The people that work on this content are dedicated to making sure that we get it just right as we know people are counting on us in their time of need.”

Erica Kuhn, MPH, director of health information & publications at Komen.

At Komen, providing trusted information is more than a goal; it’s our responsibility. We carefully develop our information to meet the highest standards of accuracy, consistency and transparency. The goal is simple: empower people to make informed breast care decisions in partnership with their health care providers, and to confidently be able to advocate for themselves and others.

Each topic reflects the most current evidence available, drawn from human studies published in reputable peer-reviewed journals and clinical practice guidelines such as those from the National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN). Statements link back to their original source, allowing readers to see exactly where the information comes from.

Each section undergoes a rigorous review process, beginning with a comprehensive literature review of studies conducted in people and published in reputable peer-reviewed journals. This ensures the information shared is not only evidence-based but also timely and reflective of current best practices.

Each page clearly lists the most recent date it was updated to ensure transparency and build trust.

The site is also dynamic and engaging, featuring videos from experts in the field and Komen’s Breast Cancer 101 tool, graphics, tables and interactive 3D models that make complex information easier to understand and apply. All of Komen’s educational content is entirely free of commercial bias, ensuring that the information provided is guided only by science, compassion and the needs of the breast cancer community. This commitment to accuracy and accessibility is carried through every element of Komen’s educational mission.

Patient-Centered and Mission-Driven

Through a disciplined, multi-layered review process, Komen ensures the information within the About Breast Cancer section reflects both the latest scientific evidence and the real-world experiences of those affected by breast cancer. Komen’s Health Information and Publications team leads this ongoing effort with precision and care, coordinating the expertise of Dana-Farber/Harvard Cancer Center reviewers, Komen Scholars and Advocates in Science to maintain the integrity and clarity of the information we provide.

Together, these medical experts and patient advocates work hand in hand to balance accuracy with empathy, striving to make complex research understandable, relatable and meaningful to everyone who turns to Komen for answers.

“I am so proud of the rigorous evidence-based process we use, and the thought and care that goes into every detail and word that is chosen within the About Breast Cancer section. The people that work on this content are dedicated to making sure that we get it just right as we know people are counting on us in their time of need,” said Erica Kuhn, MPH, director of health information & publications at Komen.
